''Doomsday'' is a 2008 science fiction action film written and directed by Neil Marshall. The film takes place in the future in Scotland, which has been quarantined because of a deadly virus. When the virus is found in London, political leaders send a team led by Major Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra) to Scotland to find a possible cure. Sinclair's team runs into two types of survivors: marauders and medieval knights. ''Doomsday'' was conceived by Marshall based on the idea of futuristic soldiers facing medieval knights. In producing the film, he drew inspiration from various movies, including ''Mad Max'', ''Escape from New York'' and ''28 Days Later''.
Marshall had a budget three times the size of his previous two films, ''The Descent'' and ''Dog Soldiers'', and the director filmed the larger-scale ''Doomsday'' in Scotland and South Africa. The film was released on 14 March 2008 in the United States and Canada and in the United Kingdom on 9 May 2008. ''Doomsday'' did not perform well at the box office, and critics gave the film mixed reviews.
== Plot ==

In 2008, an unknown killer virus, dubbed "The Reaper Virus" infects Scotland. The UK government cannot contain or cure the virus, and they decide to build a 60-foot containment wall over the border with Scotland and its islands, isolating it from the rest of Britain.
The quarantine is deemed a success, with the Scottish population dying off from the virus and apparently ensuring the safety of the rest of the UK population, at the cost of the entirety of Scotland. However the genocidal quarantine operation perpetuated by the UK government, as well as the general popularity of Scotland worldwide, destroys diplomatic and economic relations between the UK and the rest of the world, including the United States and the Commonwealth of Nations, causing massive unemployment, civil unrest and extreme economic turmoil, causing the UK to collapse into a dystopia.
27 years after the Scotland quarantine, in 2035 London, during a police raid, police discover several people infected with Reaper Virus. Fearing that the virus has returned to the rest of Britain, the Prime Minister and his right-hand man share with domestic security chief Captain Nelson news of survivors in Scotland during a satellite footage of the area, leading them to believe a cure may exist there. They order him to send a team into Scotland to find medical researcher Dr. Kane, who was working on a cure when Scotland was quarantined. Nelson chooses Major Eden Sinclair to lead the team.
As Sinclair's team approaches the wall, they are warned by Nelson that there will be no backup and no way of returning without the communications online, but Sinclair insists on getting in. They breach the wall and close it, entering the quarantine zone, while Nelson stays behind in the safe zone. Sinclair and her team depart for Glasgow, the last known location of Dr. Kane during the 2008 quarantine. After arriving in Glasgow, while searching the local hospital for survivors, Sinclair and her team are ambushed by a group of marauders. After taking heavy casualties, Sinclair and Dr. Talbot are captured while Sgt. Norton and Dr. Stirling manage to escape the attack. Sinclair is interrogated and tortured by the gang's leader, Sol, and Dr. Talbot is burned alive. Sol reveals that he dreams of life outside Scotland and is keeping her alive so he could use her as leverage and free himself by driving over the wall. During Talbot's immolation, Sinclair manages to escape and kill Viper with the help of another prisoner, Cally.
After meeting back up with Sgt. Norton and Dr. Stirling, they make their escape via train. Cally reveals that she arrived in Glasgow to search for Sol, her ''brother'', also revealing that Kane is her father. She also reveals that Sol was unsatisfied with Kane's rule, and departed to create his own army.
After arriving to a secluded spot, they are surrounded by Kane's soldiers, armed with archaic weapons and armor, and Cally's friend joshua is killed while the rest are taken prisoner. Sinclair and Norton are brought to Marcus Kane, who informs Sinclair of the truth: there is no cure, just people with a natural immunity, and sentences her and her group to death.
Meanwhile, the Prime minister has launched a secret plan to isolate the central London area because of the infection. However, an infected, deranged man breaks into the Parliament, makes his way to the central offices and tries to kill him, but he is shot by Nelson. However, as his blood spilled over him, his right hand man has him isolated and takes his place as de facto Prime Minister.
Meanwhile in Scotland, Kane reveals to Sinclair that he lost his sense of purpose when the quarantine started, when he lost his wife and was left only with Cally and Sol, telling her that as a result he became a twisted, sadistic leader of a medieval style army. Sol distanced himself from Kane, leading his own army and controlling Glasgow. On the morning of execution, he lets Sinclair loose in a medieval duel against Telamon, Kane's executioner. However, after a fight, Sinclair pulls a guard from the wall in order to get his weapon and defeats him and is forced to kill him.
During the duel, the rest of team escapes, set off explosions, and rescue Sinclair. The three remaining team members and Calley escape to a fallout shelter entrance on horseback while being pursued. They locate an underground facility in the forest and find an old but pristine 2007 Bentley Continental GT in underground storage, which they fuel up and use to leave. Kane's medieval knights chase them and Norton is killed by Kane's men as the others drive back to the quarantine wall. Sol himself catches up with his marauders in weird vehicles and chases them.
After a, high-speed chase with Sol's marauders, during which Sol is killed, Sinclair is tracked down by a government gunship and the new prime minister himself arrives and reveals he will let the virus continue as a form of population control and profit. Cally's blood is to be used as a vaccine for the virus and Calley and Stirling reluctantly leave in the gunship, while Sinclair chooses to stay behind. Nelson flies into the quarantine zone to speak with her and she gives him a recording of the conversation. In the end, Sinclair delivers Sol's head to the marauders and they cheer, perhaps accepting Sinclair as their new leader. The recording is broadcast to the rest of the country.
